Alaska Construction Academies
The Alaska Construction Academy (AKCA) was created in 2006 in conjunction with industry professionals, local school districts, adult education providers, Alaska Native associations, and the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Through partnership efforts, Alaskan high school students and adults are trained and placed into high demand, construction and trade apprenticeship programs, as defined by the Alaska Workforce Investment Board.
The Alaska Construction Academies work with members of the Home Building Associations, apprenticeship programs, and local school districts to ensure participants receive the standard skills necessary for entry into construction occupations. By providing School-to-Apprenticeship training programs for high school students and evening classes to adults, AKCA can offer knowledgeable, motivated, entry-level employees to fill high-demand construction industry jobs.
The Alaska Construction Academies are located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, the Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su Borough, and Ketchikan with regional academies in Bethel, Kodiak, and Nome.
The goals of the academies:
- Promote understanding among Alaskans about career opportunities in construction related occupations
- Develop a strong, flexible workforce able to continue with registered apprenticeship and/or post-secondary education training in the construction industry
- Enable employers to hire workers that received quality training which increases productivity and safety of the workforce
